Over the last seven years, at the Free University of Bolzano, we explore the meeting points between design and journalism, experimenting with innovative information and involvement methods. Through interdisciplinary working groups we design information experiences that return as many facets as possible of today's complexity, in a more accessible way, to a broader audience. Matteo Moretti, researcher, designer and co-founder of the visual journalism platform, will recount the work, joys, and sorrows behind some of the case studies he has coordinated.

Federica Fragapane is an award winning freelance information designer. Among her projects, she designed data visualizations for the United Nations Environment Programme, Wired and Scientific American and she collaborates with the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera, working on the analysis and visualization of cultural, environmental and social topics for the cultural supplement La Lettura. She is co-author of "Pianeta Terra", infographics children's book published by National Geographic Kids and White Star Kids and author of “The Stories Behind a Line” a visual narrative of six asylum seekers’ journeys. She strongly believes in the communicative potential of data visualization and she's constantly testing it.

Prof. Michael Stoll has a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding information graphics. Since 2005, he has been teaching infography at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, where he is head of the study track Information Design in the Department of Design. He also teaches courses about visual storytelling at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and visual culture at the University of Neuchatel (Switzerland). Outside of teaching, he served as the Educational Director (Intl. Affairs) for the Society for News Design (USA) and coordinates the academic exchange between participating universities. He is also a member of the International Institute for Information Design (IIID) (Austria) and serves on the editorial board of its Information Design Journal. Prof. Stoll is actively involved in several conferences related to information graphics, among them Malofiej, the renowned infographics world summit in Pamplona, Spain. He is an avid collector of historical infographics and owns one of largest collections on the subject. He put together the highlights of his collection for a traveling exhibition called “History of Infographics.”

Lisa Borgenheimer is graduated the B. A. in Communication Design 2012 and M. A. in Interactive Media Systems 2015 at the University of Applied Sciences. She is specialized on information graphics for analogue and digital media. She worked for serveral newspapers and magazines, like Süddeutsche Zeitung, ZEIT Online, magazine 137.5, etc. Her main research field is the methodology and process of Information Design on various media and she is an expert in conception, designing and developing static and interactive information graphics. She is currently doing her PhD in the field of Information Design, at the Bauhaus-University Weimar (DE) and is working on various projects, like a multimedial toolset for the „participatory budgeting in Mals“ (unibz). Nicolò Ceccarelli is an Associate Professor in Design at the Alghero Department of Architecture, Design and Planning. After organizing and chairing the second edition of the international design conference 2CO_COmmunicating Complexity, Tenerife, Canary islands, Spain, November 2017, Nicolò and his research laboratory ‘animazionedesign’ are currently engaged in a new exciting project about visualizing the 'Statuti Sassaresi' a codex from the beginning of the 14th century. Alfredo Calosci is an Architect by training, Alfredo is lecturer on Data visualization at the “Departamento de Diseño e Imagen - Universidad Complutense de Madrid” and on “Physical Computing” at the “master in interaction Design” at Escuela Superior de Diseño, Madrid. A professional and consultant in the area of web and interaction design, Alfredo collaborates with the Alghero Department of Architecture, Design and Planning - in many different initiatives.

Data journalism across continents: how to manage and produce data projects between Europe and Africa

Jacopo Ottaviani is an ICFJ Knight Fellow and works as data editor with Code for Africa. He is busy building teams of developers, designers and storytellers to produce cross-border journalism and develop digital tools for media and civic engagement in Africa and beyond. He builds narratives and visualisations around data and his work has been published by, among others, DER SPIEGEL, El País, Al Jazeera International, De Correspondent and Internazionale. He won the 2014 Data Journalism Award with The Migrants’ Files, a cross-border data project that uncovered exclusive information on the plight of migrants trying to reach Europe. In 2015 he made the web-documentary E-waste Republic which won the 2015 DIG Awards and the 2015 Lorenzo Natali Media Prize. In 2016 he launched Lungs of the Earth, a journey across the rainforests of the world and Borderline, an interactive atlas of migration in Europe. In 2017 he built projects such as Slumscapes in partnership with Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Search and Rescue open data portal with MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières).

Barbara Sgarzi is a Journalist and digital media expert, member of ONA – Online News Association, with more than 20 years experience in writing, editing, content managing, developing of editorial projects offline and online (Cosmopolitan.it, Donnamoderna.com, Vanity Fair.it, Grazia, aNobii.com). Since Aprile 2018, Fellow Media Trainer at Google News Lab. Previously, I was a senior product manager with Italian and international experience (Yahoo!, Leonardo.it). In the last 9 years I developed a sound background in media training. Since 2009, I created and managed online journalism and social media courses for Condé Nast Italy, Corriere della sera and Gazzetta dello sport, with a focus on best practices and fact-checking. I teach Social media for Science Journalism at Sissa University (Trieste) and I’m in the scientific committee at Master in Giornalismo Tobagi (Milano). I have a great knowledge of Italian media landscape and I speak and give workshops at major media events in Italy. I’m a digital and social media strategist for various companies (consultancy). I’m also an early-adopter blogger, with a deep knowledge of community and interaction in social web. During the last years, I’ve been working with Lenovo, TIM, Vodafone, ENI, NH Hotels, Adecco, ERG, Sanofi to help them in the digital transformation and in building their social media strategy and online reputation. I recently published Social Media Journalism (Apogeo), a full guide resuming my 10 years of training and courses for journalists and communicators, to explain the best practices of social media in news and communication.

The workshop will guide the participants through the phases that characterize a data visualization project: selection of a topic, data analysis, visual inspiration and definition of a custom visual model. The training will guide the design of a visual narrative focusing on the the participants' interests and inclinations, both from a content and a visual perspective, in order to create a clear, visually engaging and personal hand drawn visualization.

Participants will work under the supervision of the trainer and explore actual projects. They will get closer to the essence of data journalism and understand the challenges data teams have to face as they practice it. Participants will get to know the methodology, best practices and tools to make it happen. Project workplans will be developed across all production phases: conceptualization, research, refine, visualization, interpretation, narrative and publication.
